Roots: Taproots slender.

Leaves: Leaves compound (ternate or pinnate) or simple. Alternate. Blades if simple, pinnately lobed or pinnately dissected. Surfaces glabrous. Petioles sheathing. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in lax, compound umbels. peduncles terminal and lateral. involucre absent, involucel of a few small, narrow bractlets. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx teeth prominent, often unequal. Corolla of 5 petals; petals white or rose, oblong with a narrower inflexed apex, the outer petals radiant. Stamens 5, inserted on an epigynous disk. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovules 1 per cells, anatropous; styles 2, usually swollen at base into a stylopodium. Styles slender, the stylopodium conical; carpophore 2–parted.

Fruit: Fruit globose; subterete; mericarps boat–shaped; glabrous; not readily separating at maturity; primary ribs 5; filiform; the secondary ribs filiform or obscure; vittae absent. Seeds 1 per mericarp; embryo small; endosperm cartilaginous. seed face concave.

  • Probably a monotypic genus of the Mediterranean region, consisting of the widely cultivated and frequently naturalized condiment "coriander." Name derived from koriandron, the Greek name for this plant.
